FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is a traditional system of medicine originating from India, with roots dating back thousands of years. The word "Ayurveda" is derived from Sanskrit and translates to "the science of life" or "the knowledge of longevity."

What is Abhyanga?

Abhyanga is a traditional Ayurvedic massage therapy originating from India. It involves the application of warm herbal oil to the entire body, followed by a gentle massage. The massage technique typically involves long strokes and rhythmic movements.

What are doshas?

In Ayurveda, doshas are the three fundamental energies or principles that govern the functioning of the body, mind, and spirit. They are known as Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Each person is believed to have a unique combination of these doshas, which influences their physical, mental, and emotional characteristics, as well as their overall health and well-being.

Here's a brief overview of each dosha:

  1. Vata: Associated with the elements of air and space, Vata governs movement, creativity, and communication in the body. It is responsible for functions such as breathing, circulation, and nerve impulses. When in balance, Vata promotes vitality, flexibility, and creativity. However, an excess of Vata can lead to issues such as anxiety, insomnia, and digestive disturbances.

  2. Pitta: Pitta is associated with the elements of fire and water and governs metabolism, digestion, and transformation in the body. It controls processes such as digestion, metabolism, and body temperature regulation. When balanced, Pitta promotes intelligence, courage, and determination. However, an excess of Pitta can lead to conditions such as inflammation, acidity, and irritability.

  3. Kapha: Kapha is associated with the elements of earth and water and governs structure, stability, and lubrication in the body. It provides the body with stability, strength, and immunity. When balanced, Kapha promotes calmness, compassion, and stability. However, an excess of Kapha can lead to issues such as weight gain, congestion, and lethargy.

THE PRACTICE

What oils are used during the massage?

In an Abhyanga massage, a variety of oils can be used depending on individual preferences and specific needs. However, traditional Ayurvedic texts often recommend specific oils or oil blends for different body types or imbalances. Some commonly used oils in Abhyanga massage include:

  1. Sesame oil: This is one of the most widely used oils in Ayurveda due to its warming and nourishing properties. It is suitable for most body types and can help balance Vata dosha.

  2. Coconut oil: Coconut oil is cooling and hydrating, making it suitable for Pitta body types or during hot seasons.

  3. Almond oil: Almond oil is light and nourishing, making it suitable for all body types, particularly for balancing Vata and Pitta doshas.

  4. Jojoba oil: Jojoba oil closely resembles the skin's natural sebum, making it easily absorbed and suitable for all body types.

  5. Herbal-infused oils: Various herbs can be infused into base oils to enhance their therapeutic properties. For example, oils infused with herbs like Ashwagandha, Brahmi, or Calendula can provide additional benefits for relaxation, rejuvenation, or skin health.

It's essential to choose oils based on your individual constitution (dosha) and any specific health concerns you may have. This is a frequently asked question?

I have an allergy, how can you accomodate?

It is vital that clients fill out our consent/case sheet. We consult all our clients before beginning the massage to ensure we are using materials that are suitable to any allergies or sensitivities.

For those that have skin conditions ….

Do you provide showers?

Yes! Our massage room is equipped with a private bathroom, with toiletries supplied.

Do I need to be naked? What do I wear?

Whilst it is preferable, being naked is not essential! We value our client’s privacy and comfort; you may wear undergarments, and modesty covers are also provided upon request. Please wear non-restrictive clothing– we recommend old clothes that you don’t mind getting oil on. You are more than welcome to bring a towel or sarong.

What happens after my massage?

We recommend a break from the elements– no sun, ocean, or wind. These conditions can alter the state of relaxation and aggravate the practice. Plenty of fluids, and rest afterwards.
